FAIR LAB UPDATES - SEPTEMBER 2026

It’s a fresh new academic year, and that means a fresh set of updates at the FAIR Lab! Below, you can hear all about our lab’s successes, new team members, and access a new paper Dr. Clayborne contributed to that was published this summer.

Lab Successes

Congrats to Sophia Schermer, who was not only selected for an oral presentation at the 2026 ACHRI Maternal and Child Health Trainee Research Day, but came away as runner-up for best talk by an undergrad! Her presentation focused on correlates of maternal flourishing and was a great closer to a productive summer.

Congrats as well to Luis Martinez Hoyos, who was awarded both an MDCH Recruitment Award and an Alberta Graduate Excellence Scholarship, both coming in at over $35,000 in funding.

Congrats to Josh Borja, lab alum, who was awarded a Killam Fellowship.

Congrats to Angie Uy, a FAIR Lab research assistant, on being awarded a CIHR CGS-M at the University of Saskatchewan.

Finally, congrats to Rida Mahmood and Josh Borja, who were accepted to give poster presentations for their work with the lab at the 2026 Canadian Psychiatric Association'‘s annual conference, and the 2026 Canadian Academy of Psychiatric Epidemiology’s annual conference, respectively. Both will be flying out to Montreal in November to present!

Team ch-ch-ch-changes

A big welcome to Luis Martinez Hoyos and Naaija Aden, joining the FAIR Lab as our first ever MSc and Honours thesis trainees, respectively!

And a goodbye to Sophia Schermer, our amazing summer student, who is onto bigger and better things (but who we hope will be back soon!).

Dr. Clayborne is co-author on a new paper in Annals of Epidemiology, “Retention strategies and participant retention rates among prospective longitudinal pregnancy cohorts: a systematic mapping review”. You can check it out here.
