TRAINING PROGRAM
Dr. Clayborne supervises undergraduate, medical, and graduate students in a number of topics relating to population mental health, well-being, and health equity. The lab is currently accepting undergraduate students (honours theses - Bachelor of Health Sciences), and practicum students (public health, MD program). Dr. Clayborne has openings for MSc students in Community Health Sciences for the 2026-2027 academic year. Applications for research volunteers are currently closed..
Our lab is open to students with backgrounds in epidemiology, public health, psychology, psychiatry, pediatrics, biostatistics, and other related disciplines. Interested students can e-mail Dr. Clayborne with a detailed statement of interest and CV/resume at zmclaybo@ucalgary.ca. Students are strongly encouraged to review our lab’s research and values statement prior to inquiring about joining. Prospective graduate students are encouraged to review details of graduate programs in the Department of Community Health Sciences at the University of Calgary prior to contacting Dr. Clayborne. Information can be found here.
A note on projects: Lab volunteers generally work on major research projects occuring in the lab. Undergraduate students enrolled in honours theses and graduate students (MSc, PhD) are expected to come up with and work on their own research projects that fit within the general scope of the lab’s research aims - this allows one to understand the full research process, from conceptualization to manuscript preparation. We typically work with longitudinal data sources such as the All Our Families study, the Canadian Community Health Survey, and the National Longitudinal Survey of Children and Youth.
A note on funding: As a first generation undergraduate and graduate student herself, Dr. Clayborne understands the importance of financial stability and wellbeing in the pursuit of higher education. All trainees and staff in our lab (who are not current volunteers or enrolled in research-based course work) will receive a wage or stipend that at minimum, meets or exceeds the minimum wage in Alberta (currently $15/hour). Trainees are strongly encouraged to apply for internal and external funding opportunities. Wherever possible, we will aim to provide our lab members with a living wage. Trainees and research staff are critical to the success of our lab and to the institution, and thus, they deserve fair compensation.
